The University of Exeter award of M.Ed. (English Language Teaching), taught by tutors from the School of International Education at the College of St Mark and St John, Plymouth, and based at ITESO, Guadalajara, offers both standard training, and also a unique practical approach which develops participants’ reflective capacities as well as their professional skills and pedagogic awareness. The programme is informed by leading edge research and scholarship in learning and teaching.
The M.Ed. programme consists of 4 taught modules (30 credits each) and a Research Skills component including writing a dissertation (60 credits).
Module 1
Core Studies: Approaches to Teaching and Learning (30 credits)
Provides a conceptual underpinning of the entire programme and aims to provide participants with a broad view of the educational process, with a strong focus on contemporary learning theory and pedagogic practice.
Module 2
Professional Studies (30 credits) consisting of:
Language Awareness for Educational Professionals (15 credits)
Language Assessment (15 credits)
Provides participants with specialized knowledge within their professional field of English Language Teaching, enabling them to undertake language analysis and to understand the basis of language testing procedures.

Professional Field Studies 1
Methodology and Materials for English Language Teaching (30 credits)
Module 4
Professional Field Studies 2
Strategies for English Language Teaching (30 credits)
Modules 3 and 4 build on Core and Professional Studies, and provide specialist training in language teaching pedagogy (Module 3) and the design and management of the language teaching curriculum (Module 4).
Module 5
Research Skills: /Dissertation (60 credits)
The dissertation component is only undertaken upon successful completion of the four taught modules. Participants are invited to undertake a study of professional relevance which involves research and scholarly activity in the production of a 15-20,000 word study.
